Pocket Power
Mr Brent McKendry, CEO of Antig Technology,
today presented a vision for the future, where people would be
able to carry portable fuel cell chargers in their pockets.
Based on Antig's proprietary H2PowerChip™,
these fuel cells will be small enough to carry, while providing
up to tens times more runtime than a regular lithium ion
battery. When asked whether these new fuel cells would
ultimately replace today's batteries, Mr McKendry responded that
this was unlikely in the short term, as current battery
technology is a mature and reliable industry. What batteries
lack however is the ability to run devices all day, all week or
even all month. This is where fuel cells are most applicable,
providing extra power to a battery, allowing people to roam
freely without concern for when they next need to find an outlet
for a charge. Fuel cells also provide instant power, with no
"down" time which occurs when people need to charge a battery.
Such hybrid solutions, fuel cell plus battery, will be the first
products that appear in the market. When pressed for information
about market roll-out and commercialization, Mr McKendry was
very candid in his response, mentioning that fuel cells are a
new, potentially disruptive technology that will take time to
mature before ready for mass market acceptance. They are also
still expensive, limiting their appeal to vertical solutions
which can demonstrate a stronger return on investment.
Antig can be found in Hall 13 of the Hannover Messe.
